Props play a major role in today’s films. Without props, movies would simply consist of actors standing around and talking to each other. So whether it’s fake money stacks, vehicles, or jewelry, film props are essential to any movie. But in Ocean’s 8, the object of the heist, the Toussaint Necklace, has some serious history.
One of the great things about today’s props is how realistic they look. So the necklace featured in the movie looked genuinely real — and supposedly had a worth of $150 million. But while some movies do feature real gems and jewels, the Toussaint Necklace in the film was, in fact, just a movie prop.
But while the necklace in the movie was just a prop, it was inspired by a real piece of jewelry. The prop jewelry’s design was based on a 1931 necklace that was made for the Maharaja of Nawanagar by Jacques Cartier. Within the necklace was the “Queen of Holland” diamond — a 136.25-carat blue-white diamond. So it’s easy to see why a real replica of the necklace wasn’t used.
Rather than diamonds, the movie necklace was made of cubic zirconia. So while the necklace looked expensive, it was actually nowhere near the high price tag it had in the movie. But many of the other pieces featured in the movie were actually lent to the filmmakers by Cartier and consisted of real diamonds.
Filmmakers always have to be careful when choosing their props. There are standards that movie props have to follow. For example, any digital copies of prop money have to have a resolution that consists of 72dpi or less. So especially with the prop jewelry that was real, everyone on the set of Ocean’s 8 had to be aware of where each prop was at all times.
So there you have it — the stunning necklace featured in the film was not real. But it has a long, rich history that makes it even more special.
