Famous Movie Props You’ve Seen in Multiple Films

There are tons of different elements that go into making a movie, casting actors, building sets, and making film props are just a few. And, for the most part, after the movie is done being filmed, everything used to make the movie is donated, put away in storage, or simply thrown out. But every once in a while, movie props will be reused for other films. Let’s take a closer look at a few famous props that were used in more than one film.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s severed head: Hollywood’s beloved Gwyneth actually lost her head in two films: Se7en and Contagion. In Se7en, Paltrow’s head was supposedly supposed to be seen in a box but was actually never shown. Fortunately, it got to be reused in Contagion, where the severed head was shown in a grim scene at the morgue. While this prop was a little gorier than say prop money for movies, at last, viewers got to see Paltrow’s severed head the second time around.

Robby the Robot: First appearing in 1956, Robby the Robot made his debut in Forbidden Planet. Following suit, other sci-fi films based their props off of Robby’s unique legs and faceplate. And he made appearances in several other TV shows and movies, like The Addams Family, Twilight Zone, Lost in Space, and more. And now that his filmmaking days are over, Robby rests peacefully on display in the home of director William Malone.

The Oldsmobile Delta 88: Because vehicles are some of the most expensive props, they’re often used in several films. And Sam Raimi’s 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 did just that. The car made its first appearance in the Evil Dead movies. Following that appearance, the car starred in several of Raimi’s other movies, like A Simple Plan and Drag Me to Hell.

Prop and set designers work hard on the products they make and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that in 2011, the average set and prop designed earned about $54,890 a year. So when a prop is good, it’s no surprise that it may be reused. Next time you’re watching a movie, keep an eye out for familiar props — you never know what you may see used again.
