When it comes to props for films, directors and producers want their props to look as high-quality and realistic as possible. That’s why it’s no surprise that so many props for films are surprisingly expensive. But which props are the most expensive?
In a previous blog post, we mentioned the James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5, the ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, and the statuette from The Maltese Falcon. But those aren’t the only expensive props out there.
Here are four more of the most expensive movie props that have made it onto famous film sets throughout Hollywood:
- Marilyn Monroe’s dress from The Seven Year Itch. Marilyn Monroe’s iconic white dress from The Seven Year Itch (1995) is the most expensive movie costume ever sold. In 2011, it sold at a Los Angeles auction for $4.6 million.
- Audrey Hepburn’s dress from Breakfast At Tiffany’s. Speaking of famous dresses, Audrey Hepburn’s custom black Givenchy dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) was predicted by experts to sell for a maximum of $138,000 at a live auction in London in 2006. Instead, the dress sold for $807,000.
- Steve McQueen’s racing suit from Le Mans. Dresses aren’t the only expensive clothing props in movies. Steve McQueen’s famous driving suit from Le Mans (1971) also cost a pretty penny. The suit was sold in 2011 for a total of $984,000.
- Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber. Star Wars has been wildly popular among fans since the debut of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. So it may not come as a surprise to learn that Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber sold for $240,000 in 2008. The lightsaber was used in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back (1980). It was made from the tube of an old Graflex camera handheld flash and was doused in a projection paint.
